David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Qoria Limited (ASX:QOR) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.
What Is Qoria's Net Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at June 2025 Qoria had debt of AU$46.0m, up from AU$39.1m in one year. However, it does have AU$15.4m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about AU$30.6m.
How Healthy Is Qoria's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Qoria had liabilities of AU$99.5m due within 12 months, and liabilities of AU$75.9m due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of AU$15.4m and AU$32.7m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by AU$127.3m.
Of course, Qoria has a market capitalization of AU$1.08b, so these liabilities are probably manageable. However, we do think it is worth keeping an eye on its balance sheet strength, as it may change over time. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Qoria's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. In the last year Qoria wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 18%, to AU$118m. We usually like to see faster growth from unprofitable companies, but each to their own.
Caveat Emptor
Over the last twelve months Qoria produced an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at AU$33m. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled AU$17m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we do consider the stock to be risky. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start.
