We Like These Underlying Return On Capital Trends At Bravura Solutions (ASX:BVS)
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So when we looked at Bravura Solutions (ASX:BVS) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Bravura Solutions is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = AU$41m ÷ (AU$437m - AU$77m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
So, Bravura Solutions has an ROCE of 11%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 14% generated by the Software industry.

What Can We Tell From Bravura Solutions' ROCE Trend?
The trends we've noticed at Bravura Solutions are quite reassuring. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 11%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 242% more capital is being employed now too. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
In another part of our analysis, we noticed that the company's ratio of current liabilities to total assets decreased to 18%, which broadly means the business is relying less on its suppliers or short-term creditors to fund its operations. So shareholders would be pleased that the growth in returns has mostly come from underlying business performance.
The Bottom Line
To sum it up, Bravura Solutions has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Investors may not be impressed by the favorable underlying trends yet because over the last three years the stock has only returned 15% to shareholders. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
