Does Magnetite Mines (ASX:MGT) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We can see that Magnetite Mines Limited (ASX:MGT) does use debt in its business. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Magnetite Mines's Debt?

As you can see below, at the end of June 2025, Magnetite Mines had AU$2.86m of debt, up from none a year ago. Click the image for more detail. However, it does have AU$1.49m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about AU$1.37m.

How Strong Is Magnetite Mines' Balance Sheet?

The latest balance sheet data shows that Magnetite Mines had liabilities of AU$4.16m due within a year, and liabilities of AU$149.1k falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had AU$1.49m in cash and AU$179.5k in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total AU$2.65m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

Magnetite Mines has a market capitalization of AU$11.3m, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But it is Magnetite Mines's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.

Given its lack of meaningful operating revenue, investors are probably hoping that Magnetite Mines finds some valuable resources, before it runs out of money.

Caveat Emptor

Not only did Magnetite Mines's revenue slip over the last twelve months, but it also produced negative earnings before interest and tax (EBIT). Its EBIT loss was a whopping AU$4.1m. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. Another cause for caution is that is bled AU$5.8m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example - Magnetite Mines has 5 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
