Even With A 125% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Next Science Limited's (ASX:NXS) Performance Completely

Next Science Limited (ASX:NXS) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 125% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 52% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, Next Science may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 3.6x and even P/S higher than 14x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Next Science Has Been Performing

Revenue has risen at a steady rate over the last year for Next Science, which is generally not a bad outcome. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Next Science would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 2.9%. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 155% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 14% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Next Science's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Next Science's P/S

Even after such a strong price move, Next Science's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our examination of Next Science revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. Potential investors that are sceptical over continued revenue performance may be preventing the P/S ratio from matching previous strong performance. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
