Findi Limited's (ASX:FND) P/E Is Still On The Mark Following 27% Share Price Bounce
Findi Limited (ASX:FND) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days were the cherry on top of the stock's 698% gain in the last year, which is nothing short of spectacular.
Since its price has surged higher, Findi's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 44.4x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 11x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Findi certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Findi's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 54% last year. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 107% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 25%, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Findi's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Findi's P/E?
Findi's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Findi maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 3 warning signs for Findi you should be aware of, and 1 of them makes us a bit uncomfortable.
