Copper: Slowing Chinese Demand Meets Rising Supply

Summary The copper market has quietly but decisively shifted from deficit to surplus as supply is beginning to outrun consumption. Chinese copper consumption in 2025 showed no growth, a dramatic slowdown from the roughly 700,000 tonnes of annual growth recorded between 2010 and 2020. Total copper supply has risen by more than 2 million tonnes since 2022, while demand, now constrained by slowing Chinese consumption, has grown by only about 1 million tonnes. Large expansions at Tenke Fungurume, Kisanfu, Sicomines, Mutoshi, and the Deziwa mines have lifted DRC copper production by approximately 1.7 million tonnes since 2021.
