Westpac Grows Lending and Holds Dividend as Global Risk Pressures Mount Westpac reported a 3% rise in statutory net profit for 1H26, with profit excluding notable items of $3.5b.
The bank declared a fully franked interim dividend of 77 cents per share, flat on the prior half and 1.3% higher year-on-year, with a dividend reinvestment plan and no discount.
Management pointed to increased Australian mortgage and business lending, alongside geopolitical risks linked to US-Iran tensions and higher oil prices, as key influences on current conditions.
For you as an investor, the latest result shows a bank leaning on core domestic lending to support earnings, with Australian mortgages up 7% and business lending up 16%. Management also highlighted cost discipline and what it describes as a sound balance sheet, which together frame the decision to keep the interim dividend steady on a half-on-half basis and slightly higher than a year earlier.
The reference to US-Iran tensions and oil prices at a four-year high underlines that management is watching global risk closely. Higher fuel costs and related inflation pressures are in the mix as the Reserve Bank of Australia considers its next monetary policy decision, and Westpac has flagged potential pressure on business sentiment and Australian share prices. For your own view on the stock, it can be useful to weigh the bank’s current lending and dividend profile against these external risks and the broader regional and community banking push it is pursuing. HSBC Reportedly to Offload Local Retail Bank HSBC Holdings plc (LSE:HSBA) is believed to be just days away from releasing documents into the market for a sale of its Australian retail banking arm, according to sources, which suggest that the business could sell for a price in the billions of dollars. Speculation surfaced at the beginning of the year that HSBC was planning a sale out of Australia, and a move would be consistent with recent strategic moves elsewhere around the global. Sources have suggested that the business had about $40 billion of loans and about $30 billion of deposits, and the talk in the market is that at least three of the top four local banks will take a look at the business - National Australia Bank Limited (ASX:NAB), Westpac Banking Corporation (ASX:WBC) and ANZ Group Holdings Limited (ASX:ANZ). Much of its value would depend on the quality of its funding, but market experts believe a sale would be in the billions of dollars. Some say Westpac could be the most likely to bid for the business, while Australian listed financial services operator AMP, which is tipped to be weighing up future options for its bank, may also make an offer. "Westpac has concluded the sales process for its RAMS business without reaching a sales agreement," the spokesman said. "Westpac will continue to operate RAMS and support RAMS franchisees and customers while it considers further strategic options for the business." RAMS was once a strong competitor in the low- documentation mortgage lending industry. Westpac appointed Morgan Stanley earlier this year to sell the franchise business without its mortgage portfolio, and a handful of suitors participated in the talks, sources said. Westpac purchased RAMS in 2007 for $140 million in cash. Buy Or Sell Opportunity • Feb 14
