If You Had Bought Universal Cables (NSE:UNIVCABLES) Stock Five Years Ago, You Could Pocket A 191% Gain Today
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is Universal Cables Limited (NSE:UNIVCABLES) which saw its share price drive 191% higher over five years. It's also good to see the share price up 29% over the last quarter. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 14% in the last three months.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last half decade, Universal Cables became profitable. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Universal Cables the TSR over the last 5 years was 203%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Universal Cables shareholders are down 1.8% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 7.0%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 25% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 5 warning signs for Universal Cables (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
