Do Institutions Own TELUS Corporation (TSE:T) Shares?

Every investor in TELUS Corporation (TSE:T) should be aware of the most powerful shareholder groups. Institutions often own shares in more established companies, while it's not unusual to see insiders own a fair bit of smaller companies. Companies that have been privatized tend to have low insider ownership.

TELUS has a market capitalization of CA$29b, so it's too big to fly under the radar. We'd expect to see both institutions and retail investors owning a portion of the company. In the chart below, we can see that institutions are noticeable on the share registry. We can zoom in on the different ownership groups, to learn more about TELUS.

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About TELUS?

Institutional investors commonly compare their own returns to the returns of a commonly followed index. So they generally do consider buying larger companies that are included in the relevant benchmark index.

We can see that TELUS does have institutional investors; and they hold 53% of the stock. This can indicate that the company has a certain degree of credibility in the investment community. However, it is best to be wary of relying on the supposed validation that comes with institutional investors. They too, get it wrong sometimes. When multiple institutions own a stock, there's always a risk that they are in a 'crowded trade'. When such a trade goes wrong, multiple parties may compete to sell stock fast. This risk is higher in a company without a history of growth. You can see TELUS's historic earnings and revenue, below, but keep in mind there's always more to the story.

TSX:T Income Statement May 7th 2020

Institutional investors own over 50% of the company, so together than can probably strongly influence board decisions. TELUS is not owned by hedge funds. TD Asset Management, Inc. is currently the largest shareholder, with 3.5% of shares outstanding. The second and third largest shareholders are RBC Dominion Securities Inc., Asset Management Arm and RBC Global Asset Management Inc., each holding around 3.4% of the shares outstanding.

Our studies suggest that the top 25 shareholders collectively control less than 50% of the company's shares, meaning that the company's shares are widely disseminated and there is no dominant shareholder.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. Quite a few analysts cover the stock, so you could look into forecast growth quite easily.

Insider Ownership Of TELUS

The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.

Our information suggests that TELUS Corporation insiders own under 1% of the company. It is a very large company, so it would be surprising to see insiders own a large proportion of the company. Though their holding amounts to less than 1%, we can see that board members collectively own CA$59m worth of shares (at current prices). In this sort of situation, it can be more interesting to see if those insiders have been buying or selling.

General Public Ownership

With a 47% ownership, the general public have some degree of sway over T. While this size of ownership may not be enough to sway a policy decision in their favour, they can still make a collective impact on company policies.

Next Steps:

While it is well worth considering the different groups that own a company, there are other factors that are even more important. Be aware that TELUS is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...

Nvidia's (NVDA) record profit had a US$7.8 billion catch. That chunk came from betting on its own customers, not from selling its chips.

The circularity worth examining is not the mark-to-market line. A large and growing share of Nvidia's revenue comes from companies funded by venture capital, and Nvidia participates in some of those rounds. That is the loop. The paper gains are just an accounting reflection of it, so focusing on them means arguing about the mirror rather than the room.

Hyperscalers grew 13% sequentially, the other AI segment grew 25% and 138% year on year. The faster half is the funded half. AI venture funding was over 400 billion in the first half with about 70% spent on compute. That is an interesting composition shift like I mentioned yesterday.
