For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Allreal Holding (VTX:ALLN). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Allreal Holding's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. We can see that in the last three years Allreal Holding grew its EPS by 11% per year. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. I note that Allreal Holding's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Allreal Holding's EBIT margins have actually improved by 3.2 percentage points in the last year, to reach 35%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 2.4%. That falls short of ideal.

Are Allreal Holding Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Allreal Holding insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. With a whopping CHF51m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations between CHF1.9b and CHF6.0b, like Allreal Holding, the median CEO pay is around CHF1.8m.
The Allreal Holding CEO received CHF1.2m in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Should You Add Allreal Holding To Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of Allreal Holding is that it is growing profits. Earnings growth might be the main game for Allreal Holding, but the fun does not stop there. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Allreal Holding (at least 2 which are a bit unpleasant) , and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
