The Yuken India Limited (NSE:YUKEN) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 30%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 73% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Yuken India's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Machinery industry in India, where the median P/S ratio is around 2.7x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Yuken India Performed Recently?

Yuken India has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Yuken India's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Yuken India would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 8.9%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 129% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 13% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that Yuken India is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Yuken India's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

To our surprise, Yuken India revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
