At day 60, reduction in movement-evoked pain was significantly greater in the PT-Quell group compared with the PT-only group, (between-group difference, -1.2 points [95% CI, -1.6 to -0.7]; P<.001), and statistically significant improvements favoring the PT-Quell group were also observed across several other secondary measures, including resting pain, pain interference, movement-evoked fatigue, resting fatigue, and fibromyalgia impact (FIQR) during the randomized phase. The benefits of Quell were observed within 30 days and were sustained for up to six months. Among respondents, 81% reported finding Quell helpful, and 55% continued to use Quell daily. (NasdaqCM:ECOR) entered into an agreement and plan of merger to acquire NeuroMetrix, Inc. (NasdaqCM:NURO) on December 17, 2024. At the effective time of the Merger (the “Effective Time”), each share of common stock, par value $0.0001 per share, of the Company (the “Company Common Stock”) outstanding immediately prior to the Effective Time, shall be cancelled and cease to exist and shall be converted into the right to receive (i) an amount in cash (the “Per Share Cash Consideration’) equal to a pro rata share of the Company’s balance of Net Cash (as determined pursuant to the Merger Agreement) at the Effective Time, after deduction of certain pro rata payments that will be due in accordance with the MRIP (as defined below), without interest and (ii) one contingent value right (a “CVR"), which shall represent the right to receive the Contingent Payments (as defined below) subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the CVR Agreement. Under the terms of the merger agreement, a subsidiary of electroCore will merge with NeuroMetrix and NeuroMetrix will become a wholly owned subsidiary of electroCore. Upon termination of the Merger Agreement under specified circumstances, the NeuroMetrix will be required to pay electroCore a termination fee of $500,000.
Consummation of the Merger is subject to customary closing conditions, including, without limitation, the absence of certain legal impediments, the approval by the holders of a majority of the outstanding shares of NeuroMetrix Common Stock entitled to vote on the Merger, the determination of Net Cash pursuant to the Merger Agreement, and the filing by the NeuroMetrix of its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2024. The results of this study showed that TCVNS, in conjunction with personalized traumatic scripts, resulted in lower ghrelin levels (265.2 +- 143.6 pg/ml vs 478.7 +- 349.2 pg/ml, P = 0.01). Additionally, after completing the public speaking and mental math tests, ghrelin levels were found to be lower in the group receiving TCVNS (293.3 +- 102.4 pg/ml vs 540.3 +- 203.9 pg/ml, P =0.009).2 Ghrelin may be involved in behaviors like stress-induced over-eating, suggesting future avenues of research into the potential for nVNS in the treatment of obesity and possibly stress-induced eating disorders. In a detailed opinion, Judge Quraishi considered each of the plaintiff’s allegations of misrepresentations and omissions in the prospectus for the IPO and in other public statements and filings in 2018-19 and held the plaintiff has not adequately pleaded any alleged untrue statement or that any allegedly omitted information rendered any factual statement untrue. Judge Quraishi also found that the plaintiff failed to adequately allege that electroCore intended to mislead or omit information. Judge Quraishi permitted the plaintiff thirty days to try to amend their complaint for a third time but warned that “while the Plaintiff can change the words of the Complaint, Plaintiff cannot change the words of the Prospectus.” Judge Quraishi’s dismissal followed the prior dismissal of the first amended complaint, also in a detailed opinion assessing each of plaintiff’s allegations, by District Judge Anne E. Thompson, on August 13, 2021. The plaintiff decided not to amend their complaint a third time and did not appeal the District Court’s ruling within the required time. Thus, the federal court litigation is over. This follows the termination earlier this year of litigation over the IPO and electroCore’s statements initiated in 2019 in the Somerset County, New Jersey Superior Court. The study, conducted with the support of Emory and Georgia Tech University, was sponsored by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Addiction (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), through NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative. Substance use is an escalating crisis in the United States, with opioid-related drug overdose deaths rising above 100,000 in 2021. The standard of care for treating opioid use disorder (OUD) is medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including opioid receptor agonists and antagonists. Yet, the barriers to care are high with only 11% of patients who have OUD receiving the MOUD they need. Additionally, OUD relapse is common amongst patients. As many as 70% of patients with OUD return to use without medication and 46% of patients on methadone, an opioid agonist medication, will relapse. Treatment with the opioid antagonist naltrexone requires an extended period of detoxification before initiation, which can be associated with withdrawal symptoms. Relapse during this period may be associated with an even higher risk of relapse-related overdose and death. New treatments are therefore necessary for managing withdrawal in the treatment of OUD. This double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study of 21 patients with OUD found that nVNS reduced both the psychological and physiological symptoms of acute opioid withdrawal. In particular, statistically significant reductions in opioid withdrawal symptoms (-1.9 ± 3.7 vs. 0.4 ± 1.0; p=0.047), distress (-17.5 ± 26.5 vs. 2.2 ± 5.9; p=0.004), and pain (-0.8 ± 2.4 vs. 0.9 ± 1.0; p=0.045) were observed over the course of a 2-hour protocol for the nVNS group, in comparison to the sham stimulation group. This was accompanied by a statistically significant decrease in heart rate during active nVNS compared to sham stimulation, across all stimulations (-5.5 ± 3.5 bpm vs. -1.4 ± 2.3 bpm; 0=0.035). electroCore Announces Publication of Investigator-Initiated Trial Data for SAVIOR-1 in COVID-19 Patients in Frontiers in Neurology electroCore, Inc. announced that Frontiers in Neurology has published results from an investigator-initiated trial, SAVIOR-1, a prospective, randomized, controlled study evaluating non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) using gammaCore Sapphire™ in patients admitted to the hospital for treatment of COVID-19. The SAVIOR-1 trial was conducted by principal investigator Dr. Carlos Tornero, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Therapeutics of the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia, Spain, between April 2020 and February 2021. The trial targeted patients over 18 years of age and enrolled 110 patients, randomly assigned, with 55 patients in each group. Of the 110 patients, 97 patients (47 in the nVNS treatment group, 50 in the control group) provided baseline demographic and medical history data and were the evaluable population. The study evaluated the safety and feasibility of nVNS when administered in addition to the then-standard of care in patients hospitalized with active SARS-CoV-2 infection compared with the standard of care alone. The study identified significant treatment differences for certain biomarkers of inflammation. Decreases from baseline in C-reaction protein (CRP) levels were significantly greater in the nVNS treatment group as compared to the control group throughout the five-day period combined (p=0.011) and on day 5 compared to the day 1 baseline period alone (p=0.015). On day 1, CRP levels were highly elevated for 90% of all subjects, but by days 3 and 5, the percentage of subjects with normal CRP levels improved markedly in the nVNS group with day 3 CRP levels at 17.9% vs. 52.2% in the control (p=0.010). Additionally, the nVNS group had a significantly greater decrease from baseline in procalcitonin level at day 5 (p=0.012) as compared to the control group. Increased levels of CRP, procalcitonin, and d-dimer have all been reported to be associated with more severe disease and the lower levels of these markers in the nVNS treated group may represent the initial impact of nVNS therapy to potentially improve the course of a patients’ COVID-19 symptoms. nVNS was well tolerated with no major device-related adverse events and the therapy was administered three times daily to most patients as outlined in the study protocol. Ileus is a distressing condition characterized by abdominal distension, persistent vomiting, and delayed return of bowel function after surgery. For patients, it prolongs the length of hospital stays and increases the risk of serious complications such as pneumonia and venous thromboembolic events. For healthcare systems, ileus increases per-patient costs by up to 71%, particularly those associated with nursing care, laboratory investigations, and medications. Clinical endpoints in the TRANSIT study include the number of postoperative days to first flatus, first stool, first oral intake, hospital discharge, and the GI-2 composite outcome, a common clinical measure of return of bowel function. The amount of daily oral morphine equivalent requirements, as well as a number of safety and feasibility outcomes to inform potential future clinical research and use, will also be assessed. Announces Publication of Study on Non-Invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation (nVNS) to Improve Clinical Outcomes and Molecular Biomarkers in Parkinson’S Disease Patients electroCore, Inc. announced the publication of a peer-reviewed paper, entitled “Non-Invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation Improves Clinical and Molecular Biomarkers of Parkinson’s Disease in Patients with Freezing of Gait” in the journal NPJ Parkinson’s Disease. The paper reports the results of a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled crossover trial conducted at the Institute of Neurosciences in Kolkata, India in collaboration with the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University in England using gammaCore SapphireTM. The study was funded by the Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata, India. Neurological disorders are now the leading source of disability in the world, and Parkinson’s disease is the fastest-growing of these disorders. As populations age and life expectancy increases, the number of individuals with Parkinson’s disease and the duration of the disease will increase, leading to more patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease. To address this burden, primary prevention strategies based on the underlying causes of Parkinson’s disease and more effective symptomatic treatments are needed. The study, which enrolled thirty-six subjects, was undertaken to explore the safety, feasibility and efficacy of self-administered non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) in the treatment of gait and other motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. In a subgroup of study patients, levels of selected neurotrophins, markers of inflammation and oxidative stress were measured in blood before and after nVNS. Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) has been found to be beneficial in improving locomotion in a rat model of PD,3 and two independent preliminary studies found improvement in gait in patients with PD after a single application of cervical nVNS. The study provides preliminary evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of nVNS in treating motor and non-motor symptoms of PD. Patients were satisfied with the treatment and the majority were able to self-administer nVNS. Adverse events were infrequent, non-serious, and similar across both Active and Sham groups. Significant increases in velocity (p=0.003), step length (p=0.007), and a reduction in stance time (p=0.001) were seen in the nVNS treated group compared to sham stimulation, indicating that PD patients were walking not only with a faster pace but also with improved rhythm. Other gait parameters also showed significant improvement from baseline in all five domains, specifically after nVNS treatment, suggesting that nVNS may result in an overall improvement in the quality of gait in PD patients. Treatment with nVNS significantly reduced TNF-a levels (p<0.05) and increased concentrations of reduced glutathione (p<0.05), which are both markers of inflammation in PD patients.
