Kennametal Rises 50% as Major Holder Sells US$181 Million on Strong Tungsten Demand Brandes Investment Partners sold about 4.97 million Kennametal shares in the first quarter, reducing its stake by roughly US$181 million.
Kennametal’s stock has risen about 50% over the past year, supported by strong manufacturing demand and higher tungsten prices.
The company reported a fiscal third quarter with revenue up 22% year over year and raised its full-year sales and earnings guidance.
The key takeaway is that a large fund trimmed its position after a strong run in the stock at the same time the company lifted its outlook on the back of strong demand and higher tungsten prices.
You should weigh the signal from the fund’s sizeable sale against Kennametal’s higher guidance and the role that commodity pricing, particularly tungsten, plays in the company’s results. Valuation Update With 7 Day Price Move • May 13
