Vodacom Group's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before this announcement, Vodacom Group was paying out 84% of earnings, but a comparatively small 71% of free cash flows. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
EPS is set to grow by 1.6% over the next year. If the dividend continues growing along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 83%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
Vodacom Group Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The first annual payment during the last 10 years was R7.10 in 2012, and the most recent fiscal year payment was R8.50. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 1.8% over that duration. Dividends have grown relatively slowly, which is not great, but some investors may value the relative consistency of the dividend.
Vodacom Group May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. However, Vodacom Group has only grown its earnings per share at 2.1% per annum over the past five years. There are exceptions, but limited earnings growth and a high payout ratio can signal that a company has reached maturity. When a company prefers to pay out cash to its shareholders instead of reinvesting it, this can often say a lot about that company's dividend prospects.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Vodacom Group's payments are rock solid. The company has been bring in plenty of cash to cover the dividend, but we don't necessarily think that makes it a great dividend stock. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
