Entergy's (NYSE:ETR) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Entergy Corporation's (NYSE:ETR) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to $1.07 on 1st of June. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 3.9%.

Entergy's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. The last dividend made up quite a large portion of free cash flows, and this was made worse by the lack of free cash flows. Generally, we think that this would be a risky long term practice.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 43.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 58%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high.
Entergy Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $3.32 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of $4.28. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 2.6% per annum over that time. Although we can't deny that the dividend has been remarkably stable in the past, the growth has been pretty muted.
Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Entergy has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 18% per annum. Past earnings growth has been decent, but unless this is one of those rare businesses that can grow without additional capital investment or marketing spend, we'd generally expect the higher payout ratio to limit its future growth prospects.
Our Thoughts On Entergy's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. We can't deny that the payments have been very stable, but we are a little bit worried about the very high payout ratio. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
