Here's Why We Think Arrow Electronics (NYSE:ARW) Is Well Worth Watching
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Arrow Electronics (NYSE:ARW). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Arrow Electronics with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Arrow Electronics' Improving Profits
In the last three years Arrow Electronics' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Outstandingly, Arrow Electronics' EPS shot from US$11.25 to US$21.76, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 93% year-on-year growth like that.
It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Arrow Electronics achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 11% to US$36b. That's a real positive.

Are Arrow Electronics Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Arrow Electronics has a market capitalisation of US$6.1b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Indeed, they hold US$34m worth of its stock. This considerable investment should help drive long-term value in the business. While their ownership only accounts for 0.6%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Arrow Electronics, with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b, is around US$8.7m.
Arrow Electronics offered total compensation worth US$5.4m to its CEO in the year to December 2021. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
Is Arrow Electronics Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Arrow Electronics' earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The drastic earnings growth indicates the business is going from strength to strength. Hopefully a trend that continues well into the future. Arrow Electronics certainly ticks a few boxes, so we think it's probably well worth further consideration. You should always think about risks though.
