AmpliTech Group (NASDAQ:AMPG) Is In A Good Position To Deliver On Growth Plans
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
So should AmpliTech Group (NASDAQ:AMPG) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

When Might AmpliTech Group Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. As at December 2023, AmpliTech Group had cash of US$6.7m and such minimal debt that we can ignore it for the purposes of this analysis. Importantly, its cash burn was US$4.4m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of around 18 months as of December 2023. Importantly, though, the one analyst we see covering the stock thinks that AmpliTech Group will reach cashflow breakeven before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Well Is AmpliTech Group Growing?
Some investors might find it troubling that AmpliTech Group is actually increasing its cash burn, which is up 6.8% in the last year. And we must say we find it concerning that operating revenue dropped 20% over the same period. Considering both these metrics, we're a little concerned about how the company is developing. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Hard Would It Be For AmpliTech Group To Raise More Cash For Growth?
While AmpliTech Group seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$21m, AmpliTech Group's US$4.4m in cash burn equates to about 21% of its market value. That's fairly notable cash burn, so if the company had to sell shares to cover the cost of another year's operations, shareholders would suffer some costly dilution.
Is AmpliTech Group's Cash Burn A Worry?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about AmpliTech Group's cash burn. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. While its falling revenue wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. It's clearly very positive to see that at least one analyst is forecasting the company will break even fairly soon. Considering all the factors discussed in this article, we're not overly concerned about the company's cash burn, although we do think shareholders should keep an eye on how it develops. Taking a deeper dive, we've spotted 2 warning signs for AmpliTech Group you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit concerning.
