Salesforce, Inc.'s (NYSE:CRM) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 7.6x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 4.5x and even P/S below 1.8x are quite common. What Does Salesforce's Recent Performance Look Like?

There hasn't been much to differentiate Salesforce's and the industry's revenue growth lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to improve, justifying the currently elevated P/S. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Salesforce?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Salesforce would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 12% gain to the company's revenues. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 67% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 12% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 17% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it concerning that Salesforce is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
