Benign Growth For Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ:KOPN) Underpins Stock's 41% Plummet
Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ:KOPN) shares have had a horrible month, losing 41% after a relatively good period beforehand. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 49% in that time.
After such a large drop in price, Kopin may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.8x and even P/S higher than 11x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Kopin Has Been Performing
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Kopin's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Kopin would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 8.0%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 7.7% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 24% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 37%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why Kopin's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
Having almost fallen off a cliff, Kopin's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Kopin maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
