Camtek Ltd.'s (NASDAQ:CAMT) Popularity With Investors Under Threat As Stock Sinks 25%
Camtek Ltd. (NASDAQ:CAMT) shares have retraced a considerable 25% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The recent drop has obliterated the annual return, with the share price now down 3.8% over that longer period.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Camtek may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 30.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 18x and even P/E's lower than 11x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Camtek certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Camtek's Growth Trending?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Camtek's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 49% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 89% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 11% per annum during the coming three years according to the eight analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 11% each year, which is not materially different.
With this information, we find it interesting that Camtek is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Key Takeaway
Camtek's shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Camtek's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Camtek, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
