Perrigo Company plc (NYSE:PRGO) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 31%
Perrigo Company plc (NYSE:PRGO) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 31% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 43% share price drop.
Since its price has dipped substantially, Perrigo may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4x and even P/S higher than 18x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Perrigo Performed Recently?
Perrigo could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Perrigo's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.5%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 2.7% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 0.4% per annum over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 28% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Perrigo's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Perrigo's P/S
Shares in Perrigo have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Perrigo maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
