Lemonade Reaches US$1.6b Market Cap Benefiting Insider Stock Buying

Published
NYSE:LMND

Lemonade, Inc. (NYSE:LMND) insiders who purchased shares in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The stock climbed by 22% resulting in a US$289m addition to the company’s market value. In other words, the original US$470.1k purchase is now worth US$681.3k.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Lemonade Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when CFO & Principal Accounting Officer Timothy Bixby bought US$305k worth of shares at a price of US$15.51 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$22.71), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

Timothy Bixby bought 30.00k shares over the last 12 months at an average price of US$15.67. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. Does Lemonade Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Lemonade insiders own about US$94m worth of shares. That equates to 5.8% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Lemonade Tell Us?

The recent insider purchase is heartening. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
