Insiders At Molina Healthcare Sold US$10m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Published
NYSE:MOH

The fact that multiple Molina Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE:MOH) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Molina Healthcare

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Senior EVP, Mark Keim, sold US$5.8m worth of shares at a price of US$389 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$330. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership Of Molina Healthcare

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Molina Healthcare insiders own 1.1% of the company, currently worth about US$213m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
