AMN Healthcare Services, Inc.'s (NYSE:AMN) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking

Published
NYSE:AMN

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.1x AMN Healthcare Services, Inc. (NYSE:AMN) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 18x and even P/E's higher than 33x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

AMN Healthcare Services has been struggling lately as its earnings have declined faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as AMN Healthcare Services' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 58%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 40% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 3.0% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 10% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that AMN Healthcare Services' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Final Word

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that AMN Healthcare Services maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
