Possible Bearish Signals With Surgery Partners Insiders Disposing Stock
Many Surgery Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGRY) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Surgery Partners Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Chairman, Wayne DeVeydt, for US$2.3m worth of shares, at about US$33.44 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$22.52. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Insider Ownership Of Surgery Partners
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Surgery Partners insiders own 1.3% of the company, worth about US$37m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Surgery Partners Tell Us?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Surgery Partners insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. Therefore, you should definitely take a look at this FREE report showing analyst forecasts for Surgery Partners.
