Ares Management Insiders Sold US$29m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
In the last year, many Ares Management Corporation (NYSE:ARES) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Ares Management
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Director, Robert DeVeer, for US$29m worth of shares, at about US$137 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$169, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was 84% of Robert DeVeer's stake.

Does Ares Management Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Ares Management insiders own 0.3% of the company, currently worth about US$161m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Ares Management Tell Us?
The fact that there have been no Ares Management insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us.
