Possible Bearish Signals With Wynn Resorts Insiders Disposing Stock

Published
NasdaqGS:WYNN

The fact that multiple Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Wynn Resorts

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the CEO & Director, Craig Billings, sold US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$94.11 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$75.30. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Wynn Resorts insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership Of Wynn Resorts

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Wynn Resorts insiders own about US$1.3b worth of shares (which is 16% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Wynn Resorts Insiders?

The fact that there have been no Wynn Resorts insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Wynn Resorts insiders selling.
