We Think Amesite (NASDAQ:AMST) Can Easily Afford To Drive Business Growth
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
So should Amesite (NASDAQ:AMST) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

When Might Amesite Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. In December 2020, Amesite had US$14m in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was US$4.8m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of about 2.9 years as of December 2020. Notably, however, the one analyst we see covering the stock thinks that Amesite will break even (at a free cash flow level) before then. If that happens, then the length of its cash runway, today, would become a moot point. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Is Amesite's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
In our view, Amesite doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just US$236k in the last twelve months. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. With the cash burn rate up 26% in the last year, it seems that the company is ratcheting up investment in the business over time. However, the company's true cash runway will therefore be shorter than suggested above, if spending continues to increase. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
How Hard Would It Be For Amesite To Raise More Cash For Growth?
Given its cash burn trajectory, Amesite shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$59m, Amesite's US$4.8m in cash burn equates to about 8.1% of its market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.
Is Amesite's Cash Burn A Worry?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Amesite is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. While its increasing cash burn wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. One real positive is that at least one analyst is forecasting that the company will reach breakeven. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. On another note, Amesite has 4 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
