The Price Is Right For Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY)

Published
NYSE:SYY

There wouldn't be many who think Sysco Corporation's (NYSE:SYY) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.2x is worth a mention when the median P/E in the United States is similar at about 19x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Sysco has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this strong earnings performance might be about to tail off. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Some Growth For Sysco?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Sysco's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 9.4% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 195% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 12% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 11% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Sysco's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on while the company is keeping a low profile.

The Key Takeaway

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Sysco maintains its moderate P/E off the back of its forecast growth being in line with the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings won't throw up any surprises. It's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
