Insiders Of GEO Group Are Up 133% On Their US$3.70m Purchase
The GEO Group, Inc. (NYSE:GEO) insiders who purchased shares in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The stock climbed by 10% resulting in a US$358m addition to the company’s market value. Put another way, the original US$3.70m acquisition is now worth US$8.62m.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

GEO Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Founder & Executive Chairman of the Board George Zoley made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$3.1m worth of shares at a price of US$12.34 each. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$28.73), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.
George Zoley purchased 300.00k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$12.32. Insider Ownership Of GEO Group
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. GEO Group insiders own 3.8% of the company, currently worth about US$142m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
