Generac Holdings (NYSE:GNRC) Hasn't Managed To Accelerate Its Returns
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Generac Holdings' (NYSE:GNRC) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Generac Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = US$639m ÷ (US$5.2b - US$1.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
Therefore, Generac Holdings has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Electrical industry average of 10% it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 15% and the business has deployed 169% more capital into its operations. 15% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Generac Holdings has consistently earned this amount. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
In Conclusion...
In the end, Generac Holdings has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. On top of that, the stock has rewarded shareholders with a remarkable 126% return to those who've held over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
