Hudson Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:HDSN) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 25%
The Hudson Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:HDSN) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 51% loss during that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 20x, you may still consider Hudson Technologies as a highly attractive investment with its 8.6x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Hudson Technologies could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Hudson Technologies' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 42%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 39% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 31% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 15%.
In light of this, it's understandable that Hudson Technologies' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
The Final Word
Shares in Hudson Technologies have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Hudson Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
