Trade-Van Information Services Co. (TWSE:6183) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 20th of September to NT$2.75. This takes the annual payment to 3.8% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Trade-Van Information Services' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Before making this announcement, Trade-Van Information Services' was paying out quite a large proportion of earnings and 80% of free cash flows. This indicates that the company is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business, but we don't think that there are necessarily signs that the dividend might be unsustainable.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 10.7% if the company continues along the path it has been on recently. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, our estimates say the payout ratio could reach 87%, which is definitely on the higher side, but we wouldn't necessarily say this is unsustainable.

Trade-Van Information Services Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The annual payment during the last 10 years was NT$1.07 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was NT$2.75. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 9.9% over that duration. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.

Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Trade-Van Information Services has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 11% per annum. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. Although they have been consistent in the past, we think the payments are a little high to be sustained. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
