Metaage's (TWSE:6112) Dividend Will Be Increased To NT$2.75

Metaage Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. At the time of the last dividend payment, Metaage was paying out a very large proportion of what it was earning and 448% of cash flows. This is certainly a risk factor, as reduced cash flows could force the company to pay a lower dividend.
EPS is set to grow by 3.4% over the next year if recent trends continue. However, if the dividend continues along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio reaching 96% over the next year.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was NT$1.36 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was NT$2.75. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 7.3% over that duration. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Earnings has been rising at 3.4% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. Earnings are not growing quickly at all, and the company is paying out most of its profit as dividends. When a company prefers to pay out cash to its shareholders instead of reinvesting it, this can often say a lot about that company's dividend prospects.
Metaage's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Metaage will make a great income stock. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. We don't think Metaage is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
