Examining Cashflow Against Apacer Technology's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to March 2024, Apacer Technology recorded an accrual ratio of 0.36. We can therefore deduce that its free cash flow fell well short of covering its statutory profit, suggesting we might want to think twice before putting a lot of weight on the latter. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of NT$457m despite its profit of NT$542.3m, mentioned above. It's worth noting that Apacer Technology generated positive FCF of NT$2.1b a year ago, so at least they've done it in the past. The good news for shareholders is that Apacer Technology's accrual ratio was much better last year, so this year's poor reading might simply be a case of a short term mismatch between profit and FCF. Shareholders should look for improved cashflow relative to profit in the current year, if that is indeed the case.

Our Take On Apacer Technology's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, we think Apacer Technology's earnings were not supported by free cash flow, which might concern some investors. For this reason, we think that Apacer Technology's statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. But the good news is that its EPS growth over the last three years has been very impressive. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. If you want to do dive deeper into Apacer Technology, you'd also look into what risks it is currently facing. For example, Apacer Technology has 4 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Apacer Technology's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae.
