Are VisEra Technologies Company Ltd.'s (TWSE:6789) Mixed Financials Driving The Negative Sentiment?

Published
TWSE:6789

With its stock down 18% over the past three months, it is easy to disregard VisEra Technologies (TWSE:6789). We, however decided to study the company's financials to determine if they have got anything to do with the price decline. Fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes so it makes sense to study the company's financials. Particularly, we will be paying attention to VisEra Technologies' ROE today.

Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for VisEra Technologies is:

4.2% = NT$705m ÷ NT$17b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).

The 'return' is the yearly profit. So, this means that for every NT$1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of NT$0.04.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.

VisEra Technologies' Earnings Growth And 4.2% ROE

On the face of it, VisEra Technologies' ROE is not much to talk about. A quick further study shows that the company's ROE doesn't compare favorably to the industry average of 10% either. Given the circumstances, the significant decline in net income by 14% seen by VisEra Technologies over the last five years is not surprising. However, there could also be other factors causing the earnings to decline. For instance, the company has a very high payout ratio, or is faced with competitive pressures.

That being said, we compared VisEra Technologies' performance with the industry and were concerned when we found that while the company has shrunk its earnings, the industry has grown its earnings at a rate of 12% in the same 5-year period.

TWSE:6789 Past Earnings Growth October 11th 2024

Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is VisEra Technologies fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.

Is VisEra Technologies Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?

Despite having a normal three-year median payout ratio of 34% (where it is retaining 66% of its profits), VisEra Technologies has seen a decline in earnings as we saw above. It looks like there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.

Additionally, VisEra Technologies has paid dividends over a period of three years, which means that the company's management is rather focused on keeping up its dividend payments, regardless of the shrinking earnings. Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company over the next three years is expected to be approximately 34%. However, VisEra Technologies' ROE is predicted to rise to 14% despite there being no anticipated change in its payout ratio.

Conclusion

Overall, we have mixed feelings about VisEra Technologies. Even though it appears to be retaining most of its profits, given the low ROE, investors may not be benefitting from all that reinvestment after all. The low earnings growth suggests our theory correct. Having said that, looking at current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings growth rate is expected to see a huge improvement.
