Are VIA Technologies, Inc.'s (TWSE:2388) Mixed Financials The Reason For Its Gloomy Performance on The Stock Market?

Published
TWSE:2388

It is hard to get excited after looking at VIA Technologies' (TWSE:2388) recent performance, when its stock has declined 11% over the past three months. It seems that the market might have completely ignored the positive aspects of the company's fundamentals and decided to weigh-in more on the negative aspects. Fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes so it makes sense to study the company's financials. Specifically, we decided to study VIA Technologies' ROE in this article.

Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for VIA Technologies is:

4.4% = NT$671m ÷ NT$15b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each NT$1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made NT$0.04 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

A Side By Side comparison of VIA Technologies' Earnings Growth And 4.4% ROE

At first glance, VIA Technologies' ROE doesn't look very promising. Next, when compared to the average industry ROE of 11%, the company's ROE leaves us feeling even less enthusiastic. Hence, the flat earnings seen by VIA Technologies over the past five years could probably be the result of it having a lower ROE.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that VIA Technologies' reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 14% over the last few years, which is not something we like to see.

TWSE:2388 Past Earnings Growth July 15th 2024

Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is VIA Technologies Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?

VIA Technologies has a low three-year median payout ratio of 12% (or a retention ratio of 88%) but the negligible earnings growth number doesn't reflect this as high growth usually follows high profit retention.

Moreover, VIA Technologies has been paying dividends for three years, which is a considerable amount of time, suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth.

Conclusion

In total, we're a bit ambivalent about VIA Technologies' performance. Even though it appears to be retaining most of its profits, given the low ROE, investors may not be benefitting from all that reinvestment after all. The low earnings growth suggests our theory correct. Up till now, we've only made a short study of the company's growth data.
