Shin Zu Shing Co., Ltd. (TWSE:3376) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 32% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last month tops off a massive increase of 149% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in Taiwan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 22x, you may consider Shin Zu Shing as a stock to avoid entirely with its 42.7x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Shin Zu Shing has been very sluggish. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will turn things around completely and accelerate past most others in the market. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Shin Zu Shing's Growth Trending?

Shin Zu Shing's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 31%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 42% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 28% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 23%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we can see why Shin Zu Shing is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Shin Zu Shing's P/E?

The strong share price surge has got Shin Zu Shing's P/E rushing to great heights as well. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Shin Zu Shing maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
