Kedge Construction Co., Ltd.'s (TWSE:2546) Shares Bounce 27% But Its Business Still Trails The Market
Despite an already strong run, Kedge Construction Co., Ltd. (TWSE:2546) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 57%.
Although its price has surged higher, Kedge Construction may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.2x, since almost half of all companies in Taiwan have P/E ratios greater than 24x and even P/E's higher than 41x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Kedge Construction over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Kedge Construction's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 5.5% decrease to the company's bottom line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 58% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 26% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's understandable that Kedge Construction's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Kedge Construction's P/E
Kedge Construction's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Kedge Construction maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
