Here's Why I Think Great Eastern Holdings (SGX:G07) Is An Interesting Stock
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Great Eastern Holdings (SGX:G07). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Great Eastern Holdings Growing?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Great Eastern Holdings managed to grow EPS by 14% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that, last year, Great Eastern Holdings's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Great Eastern Holdings's EBIT margins have actually improved by 9.6 percentage points in the last year, to reach 13%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 7.2%. That's not ideal.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.
Are Great Eastern Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a S$10b company like Great Eastern Holdings. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at S$222m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
Does Great Eastern Holdings Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One positive for Great Eastern Holdings is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 1 warning sign for Great Eastern Holdings you should be aware of.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
