Unless you borrow money to invest, the potential losses are limited. But if you pick the right stock, you can make a lot more than 100%. For example, the BioInvent International AB (publ) (STO:BINV) share price has soared 105% in the last 1 year. Most would be very happy with that, especially in just one year! On top of that, the share price is up 101% in about a quarter. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 28% in the last three years.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

BioInvent International wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last year BioInvent International saw its revenue shrink by 81%. We're a little surprised to see the share price pop 105% in the last year. This is a good example of how buyers can push up prices even before the fundamental metrics show much growth. It's quite likely the revenue fall was already priced in, anyway.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that BioInvent International shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 105% over the last year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 1.7% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with BioInvent International , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
