Bactiguard Holding AB (publ) (STO:BACTI B) Shares May Have Slumped 26% But Getting In Cheap Is Still Unlikely
The Bactiguard Holding AB (publ) (STO:BACTI B) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 21% in that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, Bactiguard Holding may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 7.9x, since almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in Sweden have P/S ratios under 4.8x and even P/S lower than 2x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Bactiguard Holding's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Bactiguard Holding's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Bactiguard Holding's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 8.8%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 13% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 33% growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's alarming that Bactiguard Holding's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What Does Bactiguard Holding's P/S Mean For Investors?
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Bactiguard Holding's very lofty P/S. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Despite analysts forecasting some poorer-than-industry revenue growth figures for Bactiguard Holding, this doesn't appear to be impacting the P/S in the slightest. When we see a weak revenue outlook, we suspect the share price faces a much greater risk of declining, bringing back down the P/S figures. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
