When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. One great example is VNV Global AB (publ) (STO:VNV) which saw its share price drive 161% higher over five years. On top of that, the share price is up 43% in about a quarter.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, VNV Global actually saw its EPS drop 7.2% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

The revenue reduction of 4.2% per year is not a positive. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that VNV Global shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 69% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 21% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
