Shareholders have faith in loss-making Metacon (STO:META) as stock climbs 58% in past week, taking five-year gain to 241%
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. One great example is Metacon AB (publ) (STO:META) which saw its share price drive 179% higher over five years. It's up an even more impressive 187% in about a month.
Since the stock has added kr193m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

Metacon isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
In the last 5 years Metacon saw its revenue grow at 71% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Meanwhile, its share price performance certainly reflects the strong growth, given the share price grew at 23% per year, compound, during the period. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. Metacon seems like a high growth stock - so growth investors might want to add it to their watchlist.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Metacon's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Metacon hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 241% exceeds its share price return of 179%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
Metacon shareholders gained a total return of 1.6% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 28% per year for five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 4 warning signs for Metacon (3 make us uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
