Gazprom Neft (MCX:SIBN) Has Some Way To Go To Become A Multi-Bagger

To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at Gazprom Neft (MCX:SIBN) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Gazprom Neft is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.099 = ₽349b ÷ (₽4.5t - ₽983b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).

So, Gazprom Neft has an ROCE of 9.9%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 6.3% generated by the Oil and Gas industry, it's much better.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Gazprom Neft Tell Us?

There are better returns on capital out there than what we're seeing at Gazprom Neft. The company has employed 64% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 9.9%. This poor ROCE doesn't inspire confidence right now, and with the increase in capital employed, it's evident that the business isn't deploying the funds into high return investments.

The Bottom Line

Long story short, while Gazprom Neft has been reinvesting its capital, the returns that it's generating haven't increased. Investors must think there's better things to come because the stock has knocked it out of the park, delivering a 248% gain to shareholders who have held over the last five years. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.
