Sunex S.A. (WSE:SNX) Soars 26% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
Sunex S.A. (WSE:SNX) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 25% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Sunex's P/S ratio of 1x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Machinery industry in Poland is also close to 0.5x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Sunex's Recent Performance Look Like?
For example, consider that Sunex's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Sunex's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 25% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 187% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it interesting that Sunex is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Sunex's P/S?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Sunex's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Sunex currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
