While Elliptic Laboratories ASA (OB:ELABS) shareholders have had a good week with the stock up 12%, they shouldn't let their guards down. Although prices were relatively low, insiders chose to sell kr5.7m worth of stock in the past 12 months. This could be a sign of impending weakness.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Elliptic Laboratories

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Co-Founder, Laila Danielsen, sold kr5.7m worth of shares at a price of kr22.83 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is kr16.20. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. Laila Danielsen was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 140.00k shares for kr2.8m. On the other hand they divested 250.00k shares, for kr5.7m. Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Elliptic Laboratories insiders own 31% of the company, worth about kr518m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
