The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. To wit, the Photocure ASA (OB:PHO) share price has flown 286% in the last three years. How nice for those who held the stock! In more good news, the share price has risen 11% in thirty days.

We don't think that Photocure's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

Over the last three years Photocure has grown its revenue at 25% annually. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Meanwhile, the share price performance has been pretty solid at 57% compound over three years. This suggests the market has recognized the progress the business has made, at least to a significant degree. That's not to say we think the share price is too high. In fact, it might be worth keeping an eye on this one.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Photocure has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 19% in the last twelve months. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 21% per year, is even more impressive. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance.
