PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's (KLSE:PETDAG) Dividend Will Be Increased To MYR0.24
PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (KLSE:PETDAG) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 24th of December to MYR0.24. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 4.1% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Prior to this announcement, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 47% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 3.8% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, our estimates say the payout ratio could reach 86% - on the higher side, but we wouldn't necessarily say this is unsustainable.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from MYR0.70 total annually to MYR0.80. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 1.3% a year over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.
PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad Could Grow Its Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. It's encouraging to see that PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad has been growing its earnings per share at 6.3% a year over the past five years. EPS has been growing at a reasonable rate, although with most of the profits being paid out to shareholders, growth prospects could be more limited in the future.
Our Thoughts On PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
