Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Grupo México. de (BMV:GMEXICOB). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Grupo México. de Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Grupo México. de has grown EPS by 39% per year, over the last three years. While that sort of growth rate isn't sustainable for long, it certainly catches my attention; like a crow with a sparkly stone.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Grupo México. de is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 23.3 percentage points to 52%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Grupo México. de Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a Mex$639b company like Grupo México. de. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$121b. That equates to 19% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Very encouraging.

Is Grupo México. de Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Grupo México. de's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So to my mind Grupo México. de is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. Don't forget that there may still be risks.
